Bare-root perennials are sold as dormant or semi-dormant crowns (roots and a clump that will grow shoots). Bare-rooted means that they are not supplied in a pot, but they are wrapped in slightly damp newspaper with a little potting mix. This means you will need to plant them or pot them up when you receive them. It is a good way (and often a cheaper way) to get started with perennials for your garden or cut flower patch. Each one will grow into a plant and should flower this summer/autumn. They will get bigger and have more flowering stems each season. Many of them can be divided again to create even more plants after a season or two.
The following plants spread a lot - it’s great for productivity, but you do need to give them space or make a plan to contain them: apple mint, salvia uliginosa, lysimachia clethroides and solidago. The asters, oregano and achillea millefolium spread more moderately. Other plants just increase in clump size over time.
This season I have bundles of 5 and bundles of 3 crowns available for the same price. The 3-crown bundles have been growing in my nursery for longer, so they are larger and more established and will grow into a bigger plant more quickly. Some of the plants are only available in one size, but for some of the varieties, there is a choice of either a 5-crown bundle or a 3-crown bundle.
Orders will be shipped out to you in August 2025.
